If you're just starting, don't begin in a terminal. Gupax is the easy door: one GUI, P2Pool + xmrig, you put your address in and go.
Download the bundled build, extract, add the antivirus exception on Windows, paste your primary Monero address in the P2Pool tab, start P2Pool, start xmrig. That's the newbie path.

Ask anything. Heat, threads, node vs remote, spare-parts boxes that's what this room is for.
Gupax gets you hashing. The next fork is whose node you're talking to.
Simple mode will crawl a remote node so you can start. That's fine. It's also someone else's box, so it can drop, and it's worse for privacy.
If you've got the disk, unhide the Node tab in Gupax (it's off by default) and let it sync. Pruned is enough. If you already run a node in the house, point Gupax at that instead of spinning a second one.
P2Pool wants your primary address, the one that starts with 4. Subaddresses don't work there.
You're on P2Pool. That's the path Gupax bundled. Centralized pools can wait.
