Up until recently Google was going to roll out an update in four countries at the end of this month that would have prevented a user from installing applications outside of the Google Play Store unless they went into developer settings and turned on an option and waited 24 hours. They say it's for user protection, but that's a very convenient excuse for "we can lock everybody into our ecosystem".

Personally I run LineageOS so I will not be affected directly since it has no Google Play services on it. However, I could see myself being affected eventually if open source app developers decide that they don't have enough users to continue pushing updates to their software.

At the current moment, my plan is to continue using LineageOS, and when I purchase my next phone, I'm going to make damn sure that I can run PostMarketOS on it at time of purchase.
