Public LN right now: 13,711 nodes, 36,103 channels, 3,734 BTC. (source: https://amboss.space/ ) I've run my own node on a rpi 5 for years with zero losses.
BTCPay's August bug leaked LND credentials, an app bug, not the protocol. I mean it's not like AI swept half of LN liquidity, couple of high profile BTCPay server runners got hit. You don't have to have giant ass channels either you can be a leaf node w/ small balance in it.
Monero people dismiss LN outright but currently it's (relatively) one of the most private ways to use BTC. Not that anybody have to use it. LN still seems to lead the most volume version of what's being tried here, the payment attached posting mechanism, both over on Stacker and Nostr.
I'd argue if one still really likes BTC and wants to use it, LN is the most Monero way to use BTC. There's BTC silent payment stuff, but last I checked there were very limited wallet support for it.
