For whatever reason when I got into Monero I set up annual wallets. Initially to avoid all my XMR being drained in 1 bad tx or a single wallet exploit.

For each wallet (2017, 2018, 2019 etc) I have a coin tracker (currently livecoinwatch) and I just put all Monero bought in 2018 into a wallet then started again the next year. At the end of the year I know the Dollar Cost Average for that year and when I spend I can spend funds from years past where my DCA is way different than the current market price.

Like 2018 it was $350 but you could buy under $100 so now in 2026 I'm spending Monero I got at something like $180 but I'm now getting $500-$550 in fiat value which rocks!

That's the power of monero...

If you are only just getting into Monero and buying or earning XMR at $550 but spending at $350 later that doesn't make sense. Stash for a period and spend old monero when you get way more value out of it.

I'm sure there are probably better tools or ways to manage your stash, volatility and spending than I described. Ways with far less seed phrases to secure...

Anyway, how to you manage volatility and your long term XMR treasury?

I don't buy much any more I've mined for some time.

I have a few hot wallets that I keep live. My mining wallet because it's exposed on P2P has a 100 dollars earnings cap before it gets moved to an air gapped wallet.

That wallet has a 2500 cap before anything gets moved to one of the several "holdings" wallet that live secured in the safe.

In the safe I have 3 phones wiped phones that are also air gapped with caps on them up to x amount as well as other wallets with higher tiers as needed.

I honestly don't spend alot of Monero. I try but in reality I don't spend alot of fiat either. I like to think I'm good with money.

All my passphrase are 1 2 3 secured as well.

My will also contains very clear instructions for my family to have access to the funds.

Top notch security. I feel like I am at risk from becoming so over secured I lock myself out of my funds and make a giant boating accident XMR burn for the culture. The risk is my wallets aren't secure enough to keep clever humans with robots out.

reply

Yeah I live and die with the 1 2 3 methods.

I use to worry so much about my wallets then with air gapped wallets I had some peace.

Then AI came along and yeah now I'm worried about clever humans with robots.

But can't live that way so just try to be safe, secure and diversified.

I use the one year simple moving average. I'm more likely to spend Monero when it's above the one year simple moving average, and I'm more likely to save Monero when it's below the one year simple moving average.

As an example, right now is a good time to use some Monero, because it's nearly 30% above the simple moving average, and so I'm peeling off a little bit to spend on things like paying off debt and stuff like that. And when it goes back down, then I will begin collecting more again.

This is a mental brain hack to allow me to think I have less money than I do, and therefore I'm more frugal than I otherwise would be

good system, simple to run. I describe myself as a mental brain genius so I am particularly drawn to "mental brain hacks".

idk man, seems like a lot of work. but maybe you're just a lot more organized than me.
I just periodically send what I haven't spent to cold storage. I have a watch-only wallet in Feather so I can always make deposits.

and keep cold storage truly cold. those keys are only on steel, if I want to get any out I need to load them up somewhere. which is a PITA and compromises them so I never have.

I guess that's my only management "technique". make the stash hard to access but easy to send to.

reply

i don't even have cold storage for monero. i've had every type of cold wallet and even bought a keystone that they never ended up being able to integrate with monero.

the end for me was blind signing requirements for tx in defi and i thought honestly what is the point.

if you have my seed phrase even if i have a cold wallet all my bases belong to you.
