I will second the use of Mint as I personally don't use my laptop for a whole lot compared to my phone and Mint is one of those systems that you install it and you know the thing is going to work every time you turn the computer on. I'm using the Linux Mint Debian Edition and very much enjoying it

Great thanks, I'll have to look into it again.

I do recall installing mint on my wife's old laptop (which has horrid specs) and mint was to taxing for it. Debian ran without issue so I've always favoured Debian moving forward cause if it can work on a hunk of junk then it will work well on anything lol
