During the hunt for Bin Laden the NSA/GCHQ had "voice prints" which can be matched with other audio recordings to link phone calls or identities. It was also apparently used to locate Rmazi Binalshibh, a senior al Qaeda operative  was was caught in 2002.  The book by Richard Aldrich, GCHQ, outlines this on page 514.
