By some estimates bottom half of USA currently spends more than it earns. Financial immiseration of people in this country is horrific. It's all over the globe though.
I'll again quote my Canadian fren (about USA): "There is an extreme wealth inequality which I have only witnessed in third world countries which creates a cycle of extreme poverty, crime, and violence. you are unlikely to be the victim of a violent crime but I am constantly witnessing crimes - I've seen people get guns pulled, people be stabbed, people breaking into car windows, many police chases, and been in mass shooting scares. I have seen several dead homeless people on my commute to work. Being around this stuff is something Americans are very good at compartmentalizing but I find it extremely distressing."
