Hi everyone, new here, and also my very first post.
I have been active in the Monero space for a number of years now.
I have 2 computers that are not the newest, nor the most powerful.
So, I put them to work, solo mining against my own local daemon.
It's quite a good feeling when you know that you as an individual can contribute by securing the network, even with 2 PC's that are a little old.
The bonus is that I do have relatively cheep electricity, and planning on hooking my PC's up to solar in the future.

Curious to know everyone's take on solo mining.
What do you think about it?
I am thinking it is good for Monero as a whole, even though you might be a small fish in a big pond.

Personally, I run about 5KHS on P2Pool Nano and get paid out fairly frequently so I can see that I'm actually getting rewards instead of waiting possibly years to see anything.

pool mining is more likely to gain rewards and recent improvements in the design mean that unlike pool mining monero there isnt a centralizing risk. i also solo mine, not for the rewards but for the aura, the culture.

Thanks for your inputs so far.
I know that I am basically fighting with 6+ GH/s, but still, I feel good contributing in my own small way.
I know about P2pool yes, and I have tried it.
I think it's an awesome concept.
The solo mining bug has its teeth in me for now though.
I am running approximately 12 - 12.5 KH/s with both machines.
So definitely not much.
If I do find a block though, I plan on donating some of it back towards the project, so yeah.

Totally far bud.

I do have one recommendation for you then if you are going to mine solo.

You might want to mine here. There is a daily lottery M-F and when the first block is discovered you will get double whatever your percentage of contribution is 12 kh/s will do pretty good on there.

I use to use it but I eat up the whole pool so it's not really fair.

But getting in on the daily raffles is nice.

I have found 2 blocks in the past 3 years on p2p mini and I mine anywhere 40 kh/s to 90 kh/s so you may be waiting for a loooooong time!

Solo mining is a monero lottery. You might do it for years before you find a single block. Or you might find a block in a few days/weeks. You are directly contributing to Monero's decentralisation, no matter how much hash it is.

Have you tried p2pool?

Yeah the own node is the right instinct, and cheap power means those two can stay on, but solo only pays if one of them finds a whole block by itself, which is a years-long wait at the size of the network right now.

What speed are the two computers showing, even a rough number off the miner screen?

P2Pool on that same node is the better way to get paid, still no pool operator, and that number is what picks nano or mini so the payouts actually show up.

Here's some on my payouts on P2P Mini.
