Unlike Bitcoin, which relies heavily on specialized hardware (ASICs), Monero uses the RandomX algorithm, designed for regular CPUs.

You can start mining XMR with any decent computer (AMD Ryzen; Intel Core i5/i7), a reliable internet connection and, of course, a Monero wallet.

The best option for beginners is to use Gupax, as it simplifies the whole process and comes with a user-friendly graphical interface, facilitating P2Pool using XMRig.

To get started, first download Gupax (links in the follow-up post) where you have the option to download the software for Windows, MacOS or Linux.

When you launch Gupax after the installation is completed, you will see a straightforward interface.

Go to the ‘P2Pool’ tab, paste your Monero address into the designated field, choose a remote Monero node from the dropdown list, in order to connect to the network; click ‘Start’ to activate it, switch to the ‘XMRig’ tab to adjust the number of CPU threads you want to dedicate to mining XMR.

In general you should start with 50% of your total CPU threads in order to avoid overloading your system. After clicking ‘Start XMRig’ you are mining XMR on P2Pool and can expect frequent payouts, without relying on a central server.

The ‘status’ tab delivers you all necessary information, like your hash rate and estimated payout times.

I should mine on these "old" (3 year old) laptops I get from work. Mine on those until they die. They're not worth anything otherwise!

been using gupax for a while now highly recommend!

Idk what options gupax offers for which p2pool chain, but if you have less than 10KHS, you would probably be better off on P2Pool Nano. If you have more than that, you'd probably be better off on P2Pool Mini. And if you have a ton of hashrate, then you can use the P2Pool main chain

The difficulty is so high on the main P2 pool chain that using a regular consumer CPU probably won't do much for you. But on something like Mini or Nano, it has a much better shot

You can select the chain you want on Gupax now.

There are certain kh/s that serve each pool the best under 10 yeah nano, 10 -100 mini and over 100 main is somewhat the default numbers I've seen around.

Gupax has xmrvsbeast now integrated in which is nice as well.
