Monero Research Lab meeting — October 7, 2026Monero Research Lab meeting — October 7, 2026

The Monero Research Lab met on Wednesday, October 7. Most of the meeting centered on FCMP++/Carrot: j-berman reported that a fresh deep review pass by ack-j (plus AI-assisted reviews) found the earlier fix for a detectable inflation issue insufficient — the corrected fix, addressing CLSAG rings that could include Carrot outputs, is in PR #499. The team settled on gating the phase-3 tree-building code behind an off-by-default compiler flag until the upstream FCMP++ library is declared final; j-berman will also enable it for tests and bring more development-branch test coverage upstream.

  • Fork grace period: Rucknium floated dropping the 24-hour "double fork" grace period at the upcoming network upgrade to make the transition safer, while j-berman preferred keeping it and making the interim code airtight. Roughly 100 stray transactions could be dropped if the grace period goes away — affected users would have to recreate payments.
  • AI-review finding moot: the flagged "shared custom unlock_time makes one unbounded tree growth" concern is a non-issue — the timelock feature is being dropped, with the retroactive deprecation date already settled.
  • Stressnet: the FCMP++ beta v3 stressnet hard forked; Rucknium's monitors are live, sech1 briefly filled 10 MB blocks with spam, and the two known v3 issues are GUI binary plumbing with fixes already scoped. ack-j will deep-scan closed FCMP++ PRs against master.

Beyond FCMP++: Rucknium re-ran 50-hour simulations of the "Are Unreachable Nodes Truly Safe? Fully Eclipsing Monero's P2P Network!" paper and reproduced its result — around 1,000 adversary-controlled peers get absorbed into an unreachable node's white_list — with a reproducibility write-up and suggested-changes PR planned within a day. Gingeropolous is speeding up Monerosim and investigating selfish-mining mitigations; vtnerd fixed monerod bugs, added proper address-book support to lwcli, and published updated wallet-encryption thoughts for the Carrot design.

$65/hr is a really killer rate for the quality of development that the monero devs put in. It's awesome to see how many of them highly subsidize their time investment purely because they love and believe in the project.

This is good to have all in one place. I like it!
