I'd argue that it is useful to hold Gold tokens like $PAXG $KAU or $XUAT.
It may be useful to hold currency coins like $ZCHF $EUR.
Perhaps tokenized Platinum and Palladium on Solana $PLTr $PALr $PALL $PPLTx (many exist) due to low fees compared to alternatives, but understand the numerous and many risks.

Outside of those coins there isn't much that interests me actually. Governance coins were a failed experiment. NFTs junk, meme coins are pure retail extraction events, gas tokens e.g. eth sol ada are terrible. BTC? ...

honestly 99.99% of crypto isn't it. Are there any coins that you think are
1 very useful
2 good investments
3 worth supporting even if they fail
Your thoughts?

Honestly, I'm just not confident any coin other than Monero has any staying power if confronted with a broader macro crash. Many people don't realize that crypto has never gone through an 08 moment where there is a prolonged wide scale economic crash. When the chips are down, the coins with genuine utility not based off of speculation will be the only ones who survive and I just don't see much utility outside of speculation for the rest of the coins and tokens out there.

coins have the ability to adopt an alternative monetary policy but the vast majority have infinite supply, no flywheel, no reason to save, store or use and therefore no users and are almost immediately on a slow rug to zero.

Honestly, I just think that they don't have a legitimate product-market fit. Putting aside the economic models, what do most cryptos do beyond facilitate speculation? The overwhelming majority of the time it's nothing. Many provide utilities for speculation like DEXs, financial utility DeFi, but that all serves the broader crypto market which is 80-90% speculation. Monero genuinely has product-market fit. Do you want to pay online in the most private way possible? Monero is the best and often only option. Cash by mail is clunky, visa gift cards purchased with cash is clunky. Monero is easy. Monero also has great money qualities and great asset qualities, but it also just does things that nothing else does and it does it very well and relatively seamlessly.

All other cryptos are solutions looking for a problem. Nobody wants a shittier version of gold (I don't care what you think, a version of gold that is much less private, has a much worse track record (millennia versus decades), and relies on the maintenance of a complex computer and economic network is not better) that also leaves a massive transparent trail back to you and makes auditing you or otherwise financially surveiling you super easy. 90% of people who buy bitcoin likely don't know how important privacy is or how fucking bad bitcoin is at it. Especially when compared to Monero. Bitcoin lost the plot when they didn't build privacy in and maintain it throughout when it was still in its nascent stage.

Bitcoin came to fight a battle with the state. Monero came to win the fucking war.

reply

Yeah, exactly. That product-market fit line is the one that matters. Monero does something nothing else does, and it does it well.

The transparent chain thing is the part people sleep on until they actually need privacy. Gold tokens on Solana sound fine until you realize everyone can see your balance. That's not a feature, that's a liability.

Bitcoin came to fight a battle with the state. Monero came to win the fucking war. That's the whole thing.

I don't hold any other coins, but if I did, I would consider holding some of the gold tokens, except for the fact that they are on Solana or Ethereum or one of the other transparent blockchains, and I don't want others to know how much of them I have.

Maybe if they were listed as confidential assets on something like Xanno, I might consider it. Although with the fact that Xanno had the inflation issue recently and had to roll back a month worth of their blockchain, I'm not even sure that would be a good idea.

Though at worst, I guess a month worth of savings would get wiped out, and that's not very much. So while it would be annoying, it wouldn't be the end of the world

the balance transparency is the killer, but most financial assets aren't held in private.

the benefit of tokenized gold - low slippage, instant swap, digital, backed by RWA assets in many cases you can call for if you trust shipping. fees are low - like gold has high fee and you can only buy in large quantities. with tokens you can buy whatever pieces and keep average price down.
