X announced this weekend that long-pressing the Like button will send someone $1 through X Money. Convenient, sure. But look at what happens under the hood.
That tip goes through X's payment service. Both parties are identified, the transaction is on their ledger, tied to your account history, your posting history, your follower graph. Every $1 tip becomes a row in a profile that already knows what you said and who you talk to. Small payments are actually the most revealing kind, because volume tells a story. A hundred tips over a year paints a pretty exact picture of who you value and why.
Compare that to tipping in Monero. Same gesture, support a creator, but the payment looks like every other payment. Nobody watching the chain learns who tipped whom, when, or how often. The creator gets paid either way. Only one of those options leaves a record.
I'll admit X's version is easier for most people. On-ramps matter and friction is real. But easy and private don't have to be opposites, and it's worth asking what you're trading for the convenience of not leaving the app.
Do you tip creators? Would you do it in Monero if the creator accepted it?
X following the stasher news lead. :]
