I think it's good to do a small maintenance routine regardless of what other workouts or activities you do. Otherwise it's easy to get weaker over time if you're not treating yourself right.
Honestly, the hard part isn't even working out. It's eating right, sleeping well, and getting enough time in nature, and away from screens.
Also, nutrition is kind of a cesspool. People constantly coming in and saying old things are wrong and new things are good and vice versa. It's hard to find good information because everyone is trying to sell you something. Any advice on good sources for nutritional info (sources not the advice itself, teach me to fish don't give me one)?
@monerostar
Nutrition is a fucking cesspool these days and I've run the gauntlet of it.
I also agree with you that depending on your goals the biggest thing is maintenance you need to hold your muscle together as you age. Some type of resistance training is a must. Especially for women. Their bodies are built so different and often lose lots of bone density due to improper nutrition and childbirth.
Now as for Nutrition info...I do like Casey Means she talks alot about energy in the cells and how we have killed our ability for our mitochondria to produce energy efficiently. We are energy beings after all so our ability to produce it is core to multiple layers internally working well.
Dr Ken Berry also is more direct and I like his still.
This is the thing. Eating is incredibly simple.
If you can learn to fast you will do amazing things for yourself. Learning what autophagy is will go a long way in helping your cellular health. They are intelligent after all they just need better direction and that is you not eating 24/7 allowing your digestive system and organs to stop processing food and actually go into a repair state...that's what fasting will do. You clean out the garbage.
Next I would say most people need to be more critical of their carbohydrates there is not such thing as an essential carbohydrate. What you actually need more of is healthy fats that will help your cells produce energy better. But they told everyone fat was bad and still do but that's total bullshit. There is nothing more beautiful than a single chain fat molecule that nothing can get through and start oxidizing inside of you. Nope just good old structure and foundation to build off!
So fasting and fat.
The BBBE diet is probably 80% of my diet now too.
People eat because they are bored or for entertainment not for nutrition. But once you flip that script in your head things change just like seeing monero vs fiat.
You get so much time back when you simplify your nutrition and schedule.
I eat pretty much the same 2-3 meals everyday in the same 6-8 hour window 90% of the time.
But again nutrition and people are and can be incredibly unique. Though in most of my clients and person life I was often eating too much carbs (all carbs are sugar btw) and not enough fat and protein.
Start flipping that around and the body starts getting what it needs for repairs internally and not just endless amounts of glucose.
So good sources...really not sure haha. It's a cesspool like you said and even the good ones are still selling you something.
I used to do intermittent fasting. I stopped when I started powerlifting because it's almost impossible to bulk and fast at the same time. I've thought about going carnivore before. I'll check out the people you recommended. Thanks.
I need to work on my nutrition since I'm plateuing. I mostly eat whatever, but mostly organic whatever. Hate watching calories or other stuff like that.
Fair I come from a more endurance background. I do lift in the winter but never anything where I would bulk but I would more than likely increase carbs just like I do on big endurance days. It's the quality of them that matters most.
Carnivore I see it...I really do. I eat a fuck ton of 80/20 ground beef, pretty much daily, with eggs, cheese and milk. I have some cereal and chocolate. Every now and then a steak. But would I live and die on that sword. Fuck No....I like chips and well really it's chips and dark chocolate..
Again organic I think does trump if it's actually clean. Food is really poisoned on a cellular level so we get fucked there too.
As for calories yeah pointless. This is where fat and protein then carbs works. It's called wrapping your carbs. Carbs don't trigger satiety so and carbs and fat also make you not stop in some aspects think fast food fried...oily chips..hehe. But if you eat your 4 pieces of bacon and 3 eggs and 3 cheese and 1 piece of toast with a slab of butter you will be way fuller than 2-3 pieces of toast and your nutritional profile is really balance as well. Notice I didn't have any fruit or veg. Yeah fiber is another one I think is kinda bullshit. You shouldn't be shitty like huge fucking dumps it's just hmmmm...I don't think thats how our digestive tract works. It can handle it...does it mean it's meant for daily consumption...meh..
The human is a very well designed machine as is...just give it what it needs. It just dumb animal after all.
I usually eat like 3-4 eggs daily and then a breakfast meat of whatever variety. I honestly probably don't eat enough and then don't do enough cardio and drink (alcohol and caffeine, not coffee) a bit and that's what really fucks me. How do you recommend accomplishing magnesium intake? I find that my sleep is negatively affected if I don't get a good spinach intake.
I get your point about fiber. You don't necessarily need to consume non-digestible garbage just to clean the pipes.
I think the biggest problem is it's very hard to actually verify the quality of the food you eat if it's not from your local community. Local community farms can facilitate visitation and are accountable to local social pressure and reputational harm. I like regenerative farming personally and although I am against antibiotics as a regular supplementation/treatment, I am OK with it for a genuine occasional illness. Much of that stuff says no antibiotics ever, which I'm not sure is great. US AG has a long way to go in general though. It's another one of those markets that is overwhelmingly dominated by government unbeknownst to the people and they use those levers of power to suppress competition. In earlier US history much farming was way more distributed which generates better outcomes. I'll take "unregulated" with many choices over "regulated" with 3 choices and many fake choices any day.
I would say most people probably don't eat enough fat and protein in the right combination.
Especially if they follow the old diets where carbs are almost half the plate. So you ain't alone.
Depending on your age I'd push back a bit on cardio, now on what you define as cardio haha, cause for me that was stopping at 10 km runs and 100 km bike rides. But strength is much more important as we age and a good strength workout will still push your cardio system. Or just walking...it's really underestimated it's benefits. Especially for the lymphatic system to turn over toxins. It needs you to pump it.
Magnesium...works a bit different and people also need to understand the forms so they use it properly.
The catch is that each form trades off absorption against bowel tolerance. Quick map:
• Magnesium oxide: cheapest, highest elemental magnesium per gram, worst absorption (around 4 percent). Mostly acts as a laxative at higher doses. It's in blends to bulk up the "magnesium mg" number on the label.
• Magnesium citrate: decent absorption, mild laxative effect, the workhorse form. Good general choice, helps with regularity.
• Magnesium glycinate (bisglycinate): chelated, absorbs well, gentlest on the gut, and glycine itself has a calming angle. This is the usual pick for sleep, cramps, and anyone whose stomach hates citrate.
• Magnesium malate: good absorption, and malate feeds into the Krebs cycle, which is why it gets marketed for energy and muscle fatigue. Popular with the fibromyalgia crowd.
Threonate and taurate are the fancy ones some blends swap in. Threonate is pitched as brain penetrant, the evidence is promising but thin, and it costs a lot.
So I am not a fan of supplements I think you are just paying to piss out most of it.
I do take (vitamin) pro-hormone D + K2 in the winter with mag-zinc as well. But that stops once the sun comes back. The mag-zinc combo might stay on heavy training days just to help my cells a bit more.
This is where my cereal comes into play and my seeds. Hemp seed, chia seeds, pumpkin seed, flax and dark fucking chocolate. Mix that with some Greek yogurt, high fat milk and a healthy cereal it's a gold mine.
I make peanut butter power balls to with them.
Hemp seeds and chia seeds are really a small fucking powerhouses and you get so much bang for your buck.
And yeah unless you are buying local it is really hard to know. It's why I stick to local meat and when I do eat produce it's local only or grown from my garden.
I'd say that's a big one too. People think they need fruits and veggies...most of those fruits and veggies have been been so "produced" they are just sugar wrapped endocrine disrupting something now and not fruit.
As for alcohol and caffeine. I love my caffeine. I time it though. Try to have decafe in the morning because caffeine just messes with that natural cortisol rise when you wake and steals energy from the later parts of your day. So I take mine between 9-4 daily.
Alcohol man I miss those stouts and porters haha I loved me dark beers. Again if you time it right with meals that's the best time for it. And actually earlier so your body can get it out of the system before sleep. So day drinking for the win!
Your body has to process the alcohol ALWAYS first but it still contains energy for the body to use. So depending on your drinking habits it can really fuck with your diet.
All and all sounds like you are trying! Don't know if I actually answered anything or just rambled on and on haha.
This is my lane so I get going!
Thanks for all the tips man! I appreciate it. I also appreciate you being thorough.
I literally have a gym in my home office, but I only manage one or two days a week... There are literally not enough hours in the day for the amount of things I have to do. I need to try harder to make some time.
I hear you. I have to schedule in my workouts or they seem to get dismissed.
30 min a day is my minimum goal. I just do my best.
Thanks for sharing.
You can do it in tiers. You can have a daily maintenance routine of 1-3 exercises (body weight, not overly strenuous) that you do no matter what. Then you have a 30m workout that's a minimum workout goal, then you have a higher goal of working out more than that 30m. Success is about consistent effort over time don't sweat it if you miss a day, as long as you develop a habit for consistency.
Excellent! This is perfectly said.
how do you run ultra with 30 mins a day? sounds fishy (or bionic). i'm investigating.
haha. I said 30 minutes is a minimum goal.
When I’m seriously training I’ll run 30 min to 1 hour runs on Tuesday Thursday and Friday and six hours on Saturdays and five on Sundays.
I lift weights the off days. :)
Also, if there aren't enough hours in your day to work out, you're probably overloading yourself. Life is meant to be lived. It's not a checklist for a series of finished projects. If you overload yourself on work, you're almost certainly letting family, your health, or your spirit (spiritual or mental health more broadly) go without. I view a high workload as overclocking a CPU. You can do it, but you'll burn out much faster. Life is a marathon, not a sprint and ideally you're meant to enjoy it too.
That being said, from what I've gleaned, you seem to be much more accomplished than myself, so take it with a grain of salt.
Thanks @shortwavesurfer2009 for mentioning this poll on Monerotopia! You Rock brother!
i play tennis since i was a kid. both my parents play and met as tennis partners. people think i play well. coaches think i am lazy and waste good potential but i just do not want to play professionally. i also do skateboarding and snowboarding. wish i can try surfing soon. started going to the gym recently. it is downstairs next door and my roommates are into it. i am no fan of it tbh.
i get up at 4.30 am to fit fitness in. i'm wired different and i'm built different as a result.
no brain no pain.
This is the way!
I also must do my workouts in the AM.
It's the AuDHD brain.
I need the endorphins to get going and to get it done otherwise I hang on to it for the whole day like a dog not getting his walk!
the physiogonmy of monero remains unparalleled
I was 250 lbs a heavy drinker and smoker till 35 and then I began a Triathlon journey.
45 now and I've finish 4 1/2 Ironmans and 1 Full. I'm a registered nutritionist as well now.
It save my life and continues to give back into my later years. Health is Wealth.
My life becomes very strange if I don't have the consistency of training. It's good for my own personal neural network.
Fantastic! Thank you for sharing your story and insights.
These are the stories/histories that can change lives sometimes without even knowing you’re doing it.
Keep it up! 👊🏻
HEALTH IS WEALTH!
I remember we already talked about it -- similar journey. I ate trash when I was younger, same as almost everyone who was not already a serious athlete in school. Got health problems after mandatory military time. Got depressed, then decided to "weaponize exercise against my own self-destruction." I now lift three times a week, soccer once, golf once. Some people do not count golf. Roughly five days either way.
And the very important part no one talks about: gym and team sport are also how you meet new people as an adult who are not from work. New friends, actual community, connections that are not your business or job.
Yes!
Golf is definitely physical. Especially, if you’re yelling at the ball and throwing clubs. lol
Thanks!
